SonderCare
Whether you are adding a bed to an existing room or setting up a new space for someone upon discharge, choosing a medical bed is a necessary part of your plans. Not all beds can do everything a patient needs, though! There are three key aspects every medical bed needs in a private setting – safety, comfort, and design:
We make sure to meet and exceed these three points in every SonderCare medical bed, as well as the mattresses, sheets, and accessories that accommodate the bed.
Not all medical beds are the same, and buyers should know their options before buying. There are three main types of medical beds – manual, semi-electric, and electric:
Manual medical beds: Manual medical beds use hand cranks to let the patient or caregiver raise and lower the head and the foot of the bed, as well as its height. It requires a person that is physically capable of operating the crank.
Semi-electric medical beds: This model uses an electric motor to raise and lower the head and foot of the bed. The height of the bed, on the other hand, requires manual adjustment with a hand crank, meaning the patient or caregiver must be able to use it.
Full Electric medical beds: The patient or caregiver can control the height and position of the bed using a remote. It does not need a hand crank, letting any patient operate it independently.
At SonderCare, patients and caregivers alike will find a complete line of full electric beds. We make it easier for patients to get in and out of bed or raise the bed to a comfortable height for the caregiver to tend to the patient or change linens.
A medical bed can’t use any mattress – patients need a model that supports their body and reduces pressure. SonderCare mattresses have a visco-elastic memory foam top layer that molds to the natural shape of the patient’s body, reducing pressure points across the entire surface. It is also infused with cooling gel, preventing the patient from getting too hot when sitting in one place for a long time.
The mattress still needs to have a firm foundation that helps the patient get off the bed. The base foam layer provides added comfort and an extremely durable foundation, while the perimeter edge foam is strong to offer safety and support when sitting at the edge of the bed.
Medical beds are included in medical supplies, and some are covered by health or medical insurance in many regions. In the United States, this includes Medicare if the patient proves that they have a medical necessity that requires its purchase. Medicare will often provide a very basic semi-electric bed.
If you are a patient, you can typically cover a portion using private insurance after meeting with your doctor. The doctor must then provide written documentation of your medical records to allow partial coverage. The supplier also has to receive the order before the transaction is finalized.
In Canada, your health care plan may cover a small portion of the cost of a basic medical bed.
